TAKING ORDERS FROM A GAL IS OK IF SHE’S IDA LUPINO

Hollywood May 16, 1958 (UP)

Three stalwart Hollywood Actors, Edmond O’Brien, Frank Lovejoy and William Talman, believe that taking orders from most women can be a bit deflating to the male ego. But not so, they agree, when that woman is the fast-talking, chain-smoking Ida Lupino.

“I never gave it a thought when they told me the director in the picture was to be a female,” said O’Brien. “I only knew I had intense admiration for the Lupino name in the business and that was good enough for me. If a director was good that’s all I ask, and I had no doubt in the world that Miss Lupino knew her job.”

Talman, who plays the gun-happy killer in the picture, said he was mostly impressed by his shapely director’s ability to thrive on the rugged existence in the mountainous countryside where the film was shot.

“Despite the changeable weather and physical hardships, there was never an apprehensive sound out of her,” he said. “She was one of the gang; in fact our leader, who met everything with an unbeatable — sense of humor. She set the pace for the seventy men who made up the troupe, and held it.”
